Accelerator Bushings

I just got a new set of engine compartment grommets including new bushings for 
the shaft on the accelerator pedal. I seem to recall a posting on the list 
awhile ago about a trick for installing these. I have clear access in the 
engine compartment. They seem to be made of a hard material do these need to be 
heated or anything to be installed ?  The Po had a piece of rubber hose stuffed 
in the hole.
