Walt---The (missing) spring in the oil filter is supposed to also keep
the filter snug against the engine block. You may have noticed that the
new filter you installed felt loose, as you were screwing in the main
bolt. If the filter cartridge is not sealed off on both ends, incoming
oil from the pump will take the path of least resistance, and will pass
thru without being properly filtered. Since engines long ago ran without
oil filters yours will not self destruct, but obviously it is much
better to have one that is working as intended. Order a new spring!
