John,

The attached is a piece I wrote up for the 6-PACK magazine a couple of
years ago. This will help you get the grommet on over the nut. IMHO, it
works quite well.

Replacing Grommets

During the restoration of my TR250, I found that the installation of
some new rubber grommets were quite a challenge. This was especially true
of the grommet which covers the windscreen wiper shaft as it passes
through the firewall. Here is a neat trick.

Remove the Crosshead and Rack Assembly from its connecting rod inside
the wiper gearbox unit. Cut a piece of plastic from the flat side of a
gallon milk jug. A 3" by 4" section is enough. Use this to fashion a
funnel which is small enough on one end to accept the hole in the grommet
and large enough on the other to fit over the large nut on the Crosshead
and Rack Assembly. The funnel should be about 4" long so it forms a
gradual taper. Hold the plastic together with a small piece of duct tape.

Lube the hole in the grommet and the funnel with Girling Red Rubber
Grease. Hold the funnel over the Crosshead and Rack Assembly. The grommet
will now slide right up the funnel and onto the wiper shaft.

I have used this principle in other places with equal success. It sure
beats wrestling with the grommets.
