Kendall---Chances are good that you'll have to have your speedometer
repaired. There are usually shops in major cities that specialize in
such things. Before doing this, disconnect the cable from the back of
speedo and take it completely out. Grease it the full length, except the
last foot before the speedo knurled nut. Reattach it. If you're lucky
the sheath that this cable was running in was dry, an "winding up" the
cable inside of it. Try to keep all bends from the transmission to the
speedo itself to a minimum, or at least in big arcs. (The fact that the
mileage portion of this 'meter wasn't working isn't encouraging, but may
start working again as mine did a few months ago, after a rest of
several hundred miles)

If the cable looks frayed, or strands missing after you take it out for
greasing, of course it needs replaced, BUT save this cable. Cut off the
last foot or so that goes into the speedo. Using this "remnant" will
allow you to test the speedo by chucking one end in a drill motor, with
the other in the speedo itself. If it's OK the speedo will run smoothly
at whatever speed the drill motor is capable of.
