I have a 76 TR6. I reported recently that I was looking for a side
flange for the differential. The collar of the flange had cracked from
the key channel to the outside. Although I had some help locating one
through the list I managed to find one locally. That's the good news.
The bad news is that it isn't identical to the one that came off. It is
identical in all respects apart from the fact that the 'key channel' is
narrower on the replacement. The guy who sold me the replacement has
restored many triumphs over the years and swears blind that there is
only one style of flange. He suspects that the key itself may have
sheered off the shaft at some point and that the flange had been
machined to accept a wider key. OK stick with me.........to help me out
the guy has now given me the shaft. So i now have a matching flange and
shaft.
I phoned my mechanic to give him the good news but he now says that he
will need to dismantle the diff again and there is no guarantee that the
new shaft will fit since the flange on the other side has an identical
key channel to the one that has broken....question. How many types of
flange are there?, One or two? I have checked the parts suppliers that I
know and there is no reference to more than one flange type. What's more
this part is no longer available. if it turns out that only one flange
type was ever made for the TR6 then I will instruct my mechanic to
remove and dismantle the diff again knowing that the new shaft and
flange should fit. If I find that there are two types of flange out
there then I will need to shop around some more.
