Hi Graham
Thanks for the info. After pulling my hair out for so long I seem to have "come 
up trumps". As they say, it pays to take nothing for granted when diagnosing 
faults!
I shall probably buy a new cap and rotor arm from a specialist as I don't want 
a repeat performance of ignition failure in the overtaking lane on the motorway 
again!
