- Because manufacturers warranty the engine. There's also the emissions aspect of rings that wear out, and so on, plus most people don't like hearing intake noise. The K&N filters do flow more easily,

- Not sure about the bimmer, but I know that on some of the GM cars I have owned the "cold air" performance filter had advantages and disadvantages. It did seem to improve performance, but only at the
