The quick and dirty test is to turn the key to ON and pull the wire from the sender and touch it to the engine block. Under normal circumstances the gauge will go full scale. If yours goes full scale

I just ordered a new sending unit as mine recently started acting up. It didn't go all at once - periodically dropping to "0" more and more frequently. I checked and cleaned all the connections with
