Hmmm, that sure sounds like one of those radio anti-static capacitors, commonly fitted to suppress ignition-generated noise from interfering with radio reception. I wouldn't know if that was a factor

That sounds like the wire from the externally mounted condenser. The wire goes to the positive terminal of the coil and it is grounded through the case and clamp. It is only a one wire type device.
