I agree with your analysis., but I would also like to add one more possibility. Perhaps the engine was eith assembled using one of those magical teflon or molybdenum-based additives or one of these

Agreed. I have put over 10,000 miles on this engine. It may have had this low compression on all those miles, hard to say. I did "break it in" for 500 miles with 30WT, and then run 10W40 Castrol for

At cranking speed (as when doing a compression check) ample air can flow past the pistons, since they never completely close off the air flow. Ditto the throttle butterflies. When they are "closed"
