You don't! Actually what you need to do it make sure the points are all the way open on the highest point on the cam lobe. Then set the point gap to 0.018" to 0.022". I usually gap them around 0.018"

By setting the point gap. Supposed to be nominally .020" for an SPL-311, with a small tolerance I don't recall offhand--should get you to about the middle of the prescribed range of about 50 degrees

What are the advantages of a Pertronics? No points to wear out. Hotter spark? Consistent spark? But... I don't like the idea of not being able to adjust the dwell. I had a Pertronics electronic ignit

Random mumblings: Dwell doesn't count (much?) with electronic ignitions. The purpose of dwell is to set up enough time for the magnetic field to build within the coil. When the points OPEN, the field

There has been a lot of recent discussion on the list after I simply mentioned that I had Pertronics in the question of dwell adjustment. I think that the "list" discussion speaks for itself; that i

Maybe I'm alone in going with points over Pertronics. Perhaps if I used a hotter coil and knew how to tweak a Pertronics, the performance might come close to what I get with points. After rebuilding

Correct. I posted a follow up, as you should set the POINT GAP to the wide side, as they do close when the rubbing block wears down. Always remember to use a little grease on the back side of the bl
