The shop manual for my 95 Buick gave a novel (to me) rationale for at least some extra grease ... to serve as a dam to keep liquefied grease from running out of the bearing when it's hot. Randall

I subscribe to the axiom that while it may not be needed, it can't hurt. If the bearing gets hot and the grease melts, the extra greese will keep the thing lubricated longer than if you only have a
