I just purchased a 1974 TR6 and have a basic question. What kind of gas should I use. I assume it was intended to use regular, the manual indicates an octane of at least 99. The best unleaded around

I burn 87 in my six with no worries. There is debate about whether the valve seats will recede at an accelerated rate by burning unleaded. I have 9.5:1 compression and my timing advanced and still d

I use premium which, around Montreal, tends anywhere from 91-94 octane. Years ago I ran on regular (87) for a while and discovered that the engine would diesel horribly after even a mile of driving.

Be aware that gasoline octane ratings in the US average the Motor and Research numbers, which gives a lower overall number than what you may find in the owner's manual. You should be fine using 92 oc

In my TR6 motor, I use Aviation fuel from the local depot. They have a pump around back, I think it is at $2.20 per gallon. Expensive, but if you only put 3-6 thousand miles on your car per year, the

Steve, I'm not sure where you are, but around here, there is a tax on motor fuel and the airports won't sell it if you aren't putting it directly into an airplane. There is no tax paid on aircraft f

Please note that running a street car with av gas is a violation of federal law (for a number of reasons, including road taxes and EPA guidelines). This assumes that you are a US citizen though. If y

Hi Phil, I'm sorry, I wasn't clear... this depot is a bulk station downtown that sells petroleum products retail in bulk. There is a road tax on the Av gas I buy. I discovered them after getting tir

Keith--It's not necessary to use octane booster under most circumstances. I don't think the "Lead Substitute" is necessary, as I have found no obvious valve seat recession after using nothing but unl
