I honestly don't remember. I know that the starters used on most of the "small car" range (Herald, Spitfire, etc.) did have an alloy spacer between the starter and the rear engine plate/bellhousing.

I can't comment on the fitting of your bullnose or longnose problem, however as far as the gear reduction starter, it's fine. Have had one in for about a year. No problems. Mine was the Moss variety,
