I've noticed the same problem with my MK IV. Tried adjusting the shim, as per the manual, but it is still looser there than any point off centre. I'd be interested in any answers to this question to

I believe that if you look closely at the rack you will see the slightly worn spot that causes this. I have been told this is a common failing or R&P steering since the pinion rides in that location
