What you are proposing is called 'sistering'. If both ends of the new 2x6 are resting on walls that will support the weight it should work fine. Sounds like you might want to sister the remaining 2x6

The cracked appears, from your post, to be 6 feet from the wall. Two 16 foot joists would not overlap the break so you face the same failure again. Each joist would end 8 feet from the wall. I would

Thanks for the thoughts, Peter. My apologies, the break is actually near the center. It's probably 2' long and runs at an angle. The new 'sister's would overlap it by several feet, although I'm reall

Make them as long as you possibly can. Remember to use large washers to distribute the clamping force on the wood face. More than a couple hundred PSI will crush the wood, causing a loss of strength.

what will happen is that you will strengthen part of the system, but create substantially higher loads at the ends of the sistering joists. the end result will be to create a new break at this point.

Maybe, maybe not. I'm not clear on whether the break is from the top of the joist or from the bottom. If it's from the bottom, it's probably a failure due to too much tension on the bottom of the bea

I'm suprised that only one joist has cracked unless you were joking to some extent about "mostly books" up there. You are right that 2x6's at 48"OC were not intended to hold any live loads, only the
