A mesquite tree would do the same thing, and give you shade, and when you trim it, you can use the branches to flavor your barbecue. Of course, here in the desert, we don't have to plant mesquite. It

My father-in-law was raised in old Texas (by an ex Texas Ranger) He has great fondness (insert sarcasm) for mesquite. He has told me how damaging it is to human and horse when trying to drive cattle.
