sorta going off on this thread, is there any difference between 3rd with overdrive and fourth without it? I'm new to the whole overdrive thing and cant figure out when to use which setup. thanks Josh

In my car at a constant 4000 rpm, the numbers are: Speed in third: 57 mph Speed in third OD: 72 mph Speed in fourth: 80 mph Speed in fourth OD: 100 mph Looked at another way, at a constant 70 mph: RP

Well, it depends on which car model, since the gearing could be different even if the OD's are the same from one model to another! I can speak about the Spitfire 1500. The OD has a gear-up ratio of .

The difference in gear ratio is very small (assuming you have the standard ratios), it can be ignored. Which one you use is basically personal preference then, I mostly skip 3rd OD. The exception wo
