Are you sure it's just exhaust fumes and not gas fumes? Had a similar problem until I changed the float valves in the carbs. I think they were letting gas leak even when the engine was not running s

I had a similar problem and did two things which pretty much solved it. The first was to adjust the carbs closer to the correct mixture (before, it was too rich which really smells quite strong). The
