The potential reasons are 1) the low ratio. If you roll backwards really fast and pop the clutch there will be a high load on the gears. 2) on some transmissions, reverse is weak. It is designed for

I agree; I've always used second gear for bump starting. First gear is too and does tend to lock and spin rather than turn over the motor. Jim Algar
