I'm a proud new owner of an 80 Spitfire (last Friday) with over 200K The previous owner was using the same oil in the transmission (4 Speed with Overdrive) that he used in the engine (Castrol 20W50).

I sure don't, but maybe somebody does. 80-90W gear lube is the only thing I would recommend for the tranny and diff. You could put it in the engine too if you don't live in the Arctic Circle and/or y

My two cents about O/D lube: I've followed the TR3 owner's manual since my first one in 1959 and have always used "the same as the engine oil" in all my gearboxes, straight or overdrive. I currently

20W50 is actually not much lighter than 90W gear oil. Reason: they are tested at different temperatures. I think the VTR web site (www.vtr.org) has got some info on lubricants, in the maintenance sec
