It's lye (NaOH?) and it's nasty. There are acids and bases. Lye is a strong base. Some oven cleaners claim to be lye free; I've no idea what is in them. -Roland Wilhelmy

I'm not sure; in some of the cleaners I think it's NaOH (caustic soda, or sodium hydroxide). Whatever it is, many if not all of the cleaners will eat aluminum. Ray Gibbons Dept. of Molecular Physiolo

But I have yet to find anything that degreases engines better than oven cleaner. Haven't tried it on aluminum heads though. Anyone got anything better? George Gorman Manassas, VA ____________________

I normally put it on engine cold, then warm up engine. Let sit a couple of hours. Hose off. Usually need a scrubby to get in tight places though (don't forget rubber gloves). Oh, and if its left on

Guys, guys, please! Many oven cleaners are NaOH. Heaven only knows what the others are. NaOH not only cleans baked on grease, but it eats aluminum and removes paint. Do you really want to use this to

Several years ago my wife (MAC) gave me a Turbo washer for Father's Day. It is a long wand with several different nozzels and has a place to put soap in. I've used this and DAWN dishwashing detergent
