I would run synthetic in the weight the manufacturer recommends 5/30 or at least a 50/50 blend. I wouldn't out-guess VW as they did extensive testing. OTOH, I see posts on the Miata.net website with

Would really cold climates use the 5W30 weight oil - like up here in Canada?? Not sure about turbo impact, but at cold weather and cold oil, 5W30 will run better and thus at start-up should be less
