- Thats not really true, there is a new standard coming up, but, the new standard is supposed to keep the old standards as subsets of the enhanced version. You might want to look into it a little deep

- As someone who runs the largest ISP in Connecticut I can tell you that the new standard ONLY applies to 56K modems. The two current protocols, X2 and 56kflex will be "replaced" by the new V.90 protoc

- Most (all right, many) 56K modems will be upgradable through firmware. This means you won't have to buy new hardware, just run a program that should be free on your modem companies website.
