The race car needs a new roll cage. After reading the safety requirements I determined that a custom made cage would best suit my needs. The rub is that all of the cage's tubing must be mandrel bent.

Let me get this straight. You have a race car and the roll cage needs replacing. You want to do it on the cheap. What the blue blazes is wrong with this picture? Come on man, isn't your life worth s

Doug, I don't think that's a 'fair' reply. There are a lot of things that the race car owner can do himself. Building a roll cage is not out of that realm. If Paul wants to get educated, buy (rent or

I am not suggesting that Paul cannot build his own roll cage. What I am saying is not to go cheap on the cage. It is one of the few things that should be built to exceed the specs. I am sorry if I m

Yes. I want to do it on the cheap. Do you think spending more on it somehow makes it safer? I also want to do it right, hence my query regarding do-it-yourself mandrel bent tubing. In my opinion the

What I use is a Model 3 bender from JD Squared. http://www.jd2.com/. This bender is a manual powered version of they type of bender that it seems like every cage builder uses. Its _not_ a true mandr

You're absolutely right. I was under the impression that to make a bend like that in 1.75 x .120 DOM tubing that I would have to do it on a mandrel bender. The way that I've sketched it out so far I

Without getting into the specifics of the rules of various sanctioning bodies, the answer is yes, you can do it yourself. The aim of almost all the rules regarding roll bars/cages is to prevent kinks

Well, the Model 3 bender will happily bend beyond 90 deg, so I wouldn't worry about that requirement. I'd recommend against the HF conduit bender however. It bends using dies that are sized for elec
