The roll pins are notorious for doing that under hard use. BRE made some that were kind of "spiral-wound" rather than being a single layer with a hollow center.

My experience with mechanisms that employ "roll" or shear pins and ultimately fail, lead to me to often wonder, "What would've broke if the shear pin hadn't?". I'd rather replace shear pins than the

That is actually a legitimate concern. I don't think I would go with a solid hard steel pin, but, I have taken apart transmissions with the Spirol type pin. In the ones I've seen using the stronger

Nothing would have broken. The forks are pretty tough as is the shifter rod. If you can break those you should enter the 'Superman' contest. Probably the shifter would bend first.

The ones I have seen crack and break were where they had been notched twice and drilled through in the same place for interlock pins and balls. These broke without shearing the original pins. As I re
