Stupidity has set in....... Just put on the new Aluminum valve cover. Admired how it looked, closed the hood, took it for a spin, and realized I never put on the cap. It was sitting on the fender pan

As for the filler cap: there's a chance that it is down inside the fender, between the inner and outer wing, as the manufacturer would say. You might be able to fish it out with a hook or something.
