OK, here goes the bolt strength thread (no pun intended) again. On another list there is a heated discussion about using all grade 8 bolts on restoring a car. Can anyone give me a simple explanation

umm...cost? that's the best I can come up with. lots of stuff wouldn't need a grade 8, but if you don't mind payin' for 'em... only from their ads. I don't think you'd need more than grade 8 on a car

The times you absolutely want to use a weaker bolt are when you want the bolt to fail before the part its bolted to fails. An example of that would be on a plowshare used to till the earth. Plow bolt

Hoo Boy Allen, You really opened a can of worms. I bet they argue you should use Grade 8 nuts and lock nuts too. Bolts and bolting are often very misunderstood, even by the engineers who are charged

BMW uses the metric equiv of grade 5 as their minimum bolt; the equiv grade 8's are used for flywhees and ohter high-shear applications. I've never seen a borken bolt over my playing with them for 21
