I've covered magnets with clear plastic food wrap before using them. Careful unwrapping catches most of the filings.

You can take the shavings off with a stronger magnet in plastic. Plastic won't stand up to welding heat. Bill

I use a length of good quality duct tape to pull off the shavings, kinda like taking lint off a sweater. TimV.
