One of the problems with a new gas welder is that they use too big a tip and then try to turn it down. What happens then is you will have a lot of torch popping and back fire and burning in the mixin

If your tip is the right size, flame is right heat and fit of material is good you don't need to move the tip much. If your headers are mild steel and you have the time you can just reheat the weld t

Amen, Larry. Conversely, a too- small tip requires turning up the flow so high that the velocity out of the tip doesn't give a good weld, it tries to blow the weld puddle around. Regards, Neil Tucson
