If the garage door springs are correct, and adjusted properly, the door should not be heavy. That said, I agree that the stripped gears are a common problem, and easy to fix once you get new gears. -

I have been pretty happy with my Chamberlain conventional (chain type) openers, no problems AT ALL and new clickers are very easy to program. Reasonably priced, too. OTOH, I am using metal/foam core

Karl I think you are correct, Chamberlain makes the Sears unit. Mine, from 1974, is still running strong. I did have to replace the bearing (pin?) on the idler gear, and the circuit breaker, not bad
