I've had a garmin 12 and the garmin 8 before that. Both are very fine and are in the low cost category. If you don't need maping you can stay in the $100 - $150 range. I'd stay away from the compact

For this type of use the Low End Garmin would be just fine like the Geko 101 (Battery Powered only) but they do have units you can also plug into the lighter socket as well. I am looking to get a GP

You might want to consider a Garmin etrex Legend. It does what you want, and I believe it has a handle bar mount available. Larry Hoy
