As others have noted the proper way is to insert a bolt in the hole. As you turn the bolt in, it contacts the end of the spindle and forces the cap off. But that is all in theory. What really happens

Channel locks will work, but I would not recommend trying to use the hole in the center. There isn't enough thickness at that point to get a good grip with a screw or bolt. Here's how I do it: After

Will, I use a pair of pump pliers to grip the dust cover and work it off. Or use a small flat bladed screwdriver under the rim of the cap and pry around the cap to loosen it. There are other methods

I braised a 5/16 UNF nut on the inside, and installed the caps with the appropriate bolts in place. When I need to remove the caps, the bolts are already there. But either way, this method is super-s
