I'm thinking I should finally break down and get a drill press. Are the fairly common, $300 Delta 17" units worthwhile? mjb.

I've got one too! I wouldn't recommend it either... the spindle runs so far out of round that sometimes it seems like the machine wants to walk away... want to buy one slightly used? -Brad

Yup. Keep an eye in the paper and go to some machine shop/garage auctions. Pretty much anything you find in such an environment will be industrial grade. I've seen a few go for a reasonable amount (

I was lucky in finding an old Gosinger floor model drill press is good shape: The Spindle head postion has 6" of travel. THe quill feed travel is about 4" The BASE is adjustable about 24" (knee style
