Wayne, you indicated earlier that the compressor is failry old and has had a of use. Inspect the pulleys to see if the surfaces the belt runs of have become polished. -- John another one of them *.?-

The direct-drive compressors do just that... however they are very loud because of the speed the compressor spins at. The fundamental problem is developing a strong motor that will run at slow speeds

Couple other things to check, is your unloader working so the compressor isn't under load when it starts, and also are you sure you got the right belt (B pitch versus A pitch)? -- John another one of
