They were originaly attached with sheet metal rectangles which had a screw the middle and a nut, lockwasher, and flat washer on the inside. I replaced some that had rusted away with strips of stainle

You could do what the idiot I bought my car off did. You drill right through the trim and then secure it in place with the biggest aluminium pop rivets you could find, completely flattening the trim
