I had the exact same problem in my TR3. I burned up three coils after replacing the distributor cap and rotor. Went nuts trying to figure it out. Then I bought a genuine Lucas cap and rotor- no more

A worn (wobbly) shaft will cause the car to run lousy, and can even cause it to not run at all. It can overheat the coil by never opening the points, and having excessive current then flowing steadil

Have you checked that your coil negative lead isn't shorting somewhere, at least some of the time? That was the problem with my MGB this year, I put aftermarket points in it that were a bit different
