From time to time, a discussion comes up about how not to overcharge a battery that's in storage. This got me wondering: why don't they overcharge while they're in use in the car? Which leads to: Why

Jim, One can certainly build a charger to keep a car battery at peak during months of dis-use. The only trick is to know a bit about the battery involved. Such batteries have several paramiters that

In theory, if the battery is held at its nominal charging voltage (ie 14.6 Volt) continuously, no damage should occur. Problems arise because the battery may not behave exactly according to theory an

Hey All, While we're on the subject of batteries I have another question. I have a battery the hasn't been used since Oct 96. I also have a battery charger, and a Volt/Amp meter. How should I test th

Point taken, but in my case I have five batteries to take care of, and the one for the LBC is a big one that's more like 100 Cdn. bucks. Plus, I have the ability to make a charger and thought that if

James, Unfortunately, a regulator from a car alternator won't work in this application. The alternator regulator works by controlling the field current, which in turn controls the output voltage. Usi

What you need is a volt meter, a good quality digital is nice but not necessary, and a battery charger with a predicted output, ie, amp meter. When a battery is above 13.2 volts, it is fully charged.

Better late than never, I guess, but FWIW, I would like to offer a few observations concerning the recent thread on battery charging and chargers: A good battery, with a full charge, produces 12.6 vo

OK, my battery has about 9V when charging and 5V when sitting. Anyone know what's happening here? And yes, I DO know it's time for a new battery. I'm just curious. -Malcolm

Several cells (maybe three out of six) have obviously failed. It is hard to say what the failure mechanism might be. It appears from its condition that the battery has not been used recently. If it w

The battery sat for several years without being cycled at all. It was on a (gasp!) concrete floor, but I doubt it affected it much. The date is 1989 on the battery, so I think it's just too old. The

I recently had a battery replaced because of a "collapsed cell". Presumably, one or more cells have shorted out. What's Dan say? Allen Nugent Graduate School of Biomedical Engineering University of
