It is only more annoying than dangerous until the splines give out completely if this happens on the rear you will not be able to drive the car because the spline will just spin in the wheel, However

I had an untraceable "clonk" like this, and it turned out to be a bad shock. (It "clonked" every time the rear end unloaded, usually from deceleration or braking, but also after bumps.) Chris Kottin
