If it starts with a jumper wire on it, then there isn't enough power to the coil to start it without the jumper. What is the condition of the distributor cap, rotor, wires and plugs? CR

A 1980 may have one of two types of electronic ignition if it is original, or an aftermarket electronic system or straight points and a coil. What do you have?. And from the info I have either factor
