I don't know what removing the air pump will do, but I can remember that when my brother did that to his '68 Camaro way back when....., It would blow all the oil out of it because of excess pressure

when you removed the stock carb, etc. you probably blocked/eliminated the venting for the oil pan. the oil is being forced out the dipstick tube by crankcase pressure. the crankcase must be vented or

My car had that problem, if theres alot of smoke, check your compressions, you may be getting some blow by. Of cource my car lost 4 pints of oil on a 5 mile jurny, mostly the oil went of the manifold
