That is so that the many varried aftermarket and chevy heaters could be installed w/o cuttong any more holes in the firewall. You just punch a hole in the firewall pad and bingo another hole to run

I believe the hole was for a Harrison heater valve control; it has the same shape. Look in Jim Carter's catalog for a picture (I have one & took it out of an old PU in just that same location). Regar
