In my experience, too "bright" a bulb, or adding more bulbs by hooking up a trailer, causes the flashing to speed up. These things use a bi-metal strip, and the strip will heat up faster with more c

More likely, IMO, the current is too low rather than too high. This can be caused by old bulbs, corroded wiring or contacts, weak ignition switch, etc. Try checking the voltage delivered to the bulb

Thanks to all for comments will get down to it this weekend. As feedback on the last problem, I did adjust the oil pressure relief spring (by about 7 turns) and now the maximum pressure is around 70p
