I would say that the door might have been frozen when you tried to open it when it was cold. A gear may have broken or stripped out (or maybe just few teeth off of a gear.) The reason that it worked

Dave, Since you have two of these you can do some comparisons. Disconnect the openers from the doors, then open and close the doors by hand, comparing how much force is needed at different positions.

Thanks for all the quick replies. I disconnected the traveler from the door so there was no load on the opener and it still does exactly the same thing. I re-checked the photo cells and they are good
