I believe that the tooth belts were developed for alternator equipped cars. Alternators have smaller pulleys. The toothed belt can wrap around a smaller pulley than the solid one. Bob Haskell 3000 Mk

A toothed belt is less prone to cracking because it is much more flexible so it lasts much longer on small pulleys. Also grip is better than the old smooth belts so they can be fitted a bit less tigh
