If the valve stuck open for a bit, there'd be enough clearance for the push rod to drop out. I've heard that the silicon-bronze valve guides are more likely to cause this. Don't know if that applies

Never happened to me on a British push rod engine, but I would rationalize your failure as one of the following.... as your push rod was not bent and the cup/nothing was broken - I am assuming stand
