The timing would have changed even if you didn't disturb the distributor, as the pickup is in a slightly different place than the cam lobe/point block. Did you have the vacuum advance hose connected?

Just checking to make sure you set the air gap between the pickup and the ring that goes over the lobes.? You indicated that you installed it but you didn't mention setting that gap with the gap tool
