They're just a pressure fit, no release pin and very difficult to get off without breaking them. If you remove the dash you might be able to pry it off from the back i.e. instead of removing the knob

It might work to try heat, very carefully applied.? We all know that at times heating up a metal part will allow the metal to expand and the part come free.? I would take a blow dryer (probably not

If you are trying to get the rheostat off to rework it, I am pretty sure you will have to put the dash in the "in service" position which will require a few steps. The rheo is mounted via a nut on to

If you are doing this to get the dash lights brighter, I recommend that instead you relamp your instruments. The lamps in your instruments are 30 years old at least, and will have a dark coating on

Ken--Since you are not thinking of replacing the rheo, take a look at joining the two wires without dropping the dash. I did mine by just removing the radio for easier access, and then standing on my
