- You almost certainly have an original, 'early' gearbox, with *unsynchronised* first gear. It behaves exactly like it should. What you do is you come to a complete standstill before you downshift into

- Agreed, Eric, on the diagnosis of an early gearbox! But I must disagree on your recommendation for dealing with it. One simply needs to practice the fine art of double-clutching and "matching revs"!

- Barry and Ed, In addition to having a non-synchro first gear, the pre '71 gearboxes have a straight-cut first gear. The straight-cut gears whine - this is why many cars whine in reverse gear BTW. So

- Eric, the number of splines is not a problem if one goes from an early non-synchro gearbox to a Mk.IV Spitfire three-rail gearbox. It is only the later single-rail "Marina" gearboxes that have a diff

- Ed, What year is your Spitfire? The early model Spitfires did not have syncros for first gear. Just grin and bear with it. For your front end wobbles you may need a trunion kit. FWIW Larry Zink 1964
