On my recently aquired GT6 the rear screws holding on the brake drums are rusted solid. They will not budge even with a good soaking of liquid wrench and quite a few number of hits from an impact dri

The drums are not the real risk -- if you mess up drilliing the screws out, you will harm the threads in the axle flange :-( Try heating the screws (and obviously everything around them, but concentr

Tom, That's about it. I would suggest however, if you have a die grinder or Dremel, you use one of these instead of drilling. The slot in the screw is going to create havoc with a drill bit. The scr

Karl, Sorry, I'm not trying to nit-pick or but in, but I think I would avoid using heat on these screws. It only takes about 250 degrees F to burn up the axle seals. Seals are a much more difficult

[snip of original article] I tend to agree with Tony on this. If you screw up the threads, so what? The primary reason for the screws is to keep the drums on during assembly and maintenance. If the t

OK, OK, OK... of course the screws aren't required, and yes, I agree that the seal would be easy to ruin with too much heat. I came home after a long, bad day, read the post, and (maybe like I've don

I recently learned a neat trick for removing these screws. It is going to be hard to explain in words ( a demonstration is worth 10M words). You need a heavy sharp pointed punch, a good quality cente

Another tool that is handy for screws like this is a hand impact driver. (at least it works good before you strip the slot) Mine looks like a solid pipe about 1.25" diameter and about 8 " long. It ha
